Event Title: Dr. Martin Luther King Day of Service

Date/Time: January 19

Location: Open Project Hand; 730 Polk Street #3, San Francisco

General Description: There will be an orientation and a meal and we will be working at the warehouse.  Tasks may include sorting, bagging, culling food items, stocking our Grocery Center shelves, shopping for our clients or assisting in our kitchen during special projects.  Kitchen volunteers slice and dice whole food and help assemble meal packages for our clients to pick up.

General Description: Students who attended the SOA Trip in November will be presenting to the HNU community about this eye opening experience.


Event Title: 5th Annual Social Justice Forum: Food Justice

Date/Time: Saturday, February 21

Location: VCPA and Brennan Classrooms

General Description: Keynote speaker Bryant Terry will kick-off this conference to inspire students and community members how to enact change in our communities to food access and food security. The intersection of race, class, gender and food will be covered in workshops and through community organizations tabling.

Event Title: Alternative Spring Break (Tutwiler)

Date/Time: Friday, March 6 – Saturday, March 14

Location: Tutwiler, MS

General Description: Alternative Spring Break to Tutwiler, MS to build homes with Habitat for Humanity.


Event Title: Oakland Spring Break Service Immersion

Date/Time: Monday, March 9 – Thursday, March 12

Location: Oakland community service agencies

General Description: Take part in a local service immersion during spring break serving the Oakland community. Transportation will be provided to sites from HNU and back to campus.

Event Title: Enough is Enough Week Against Violence: Earth Justice

Date/Time: Sunday, April 19 – to Thursday, April 23

Location: TBD

General Description: The purpose of this week will be to highlight violence against Earth. We will be looking at issues of climate change, sustainability, etc. There will also be a Earth Day celebration event on April 22 and Day of Service on April 18 or April 25


Event Title: Change Makers Week (Civic Engagement Week)

Date/Time: Monday, April 27 – Friday, May 1

General Description: Throughout this week, the Center will host various events, workshops, and activities to explore the ways we can enact positive social change. Activities include: Social Justice Art Hack, Speaker Phillip Agnew (executive Director, The Dream Defenders), Presentations by Americorps and Peace Corps, Students in Service Leadership Poster Session and much more!


Event Title: CSJCE End of Year Celebration

Date/Time: Thursday, April 30

Location: TBD

General Description: Come celebrate with the Center for Social Justice and hear about all the accomplishments the HNU community has made this year in the spirit of social justice and service.
